Lucas is from New London, MN and received his B.A. in Theatre, English, and Writing from Drury University, located in southwest Missouri. During his time at school he performed in productions such as, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Years, and Measure for Measure. He is also very active off stage, designing lights for With Two Wings, Trash, and Forensic and the Navigators (which he also directed). Lucas relocated to Southern California last August and is ecstatic to be welcomed into the ECT family!
Tell us about a transformative educational experience.
During my senior year at university I had to opportunity to direct A Midsummer Night's Dream as a main-stage show. My partner and I had been developing the concept for over year and during the rehearsal process our mentor told us that after you break outside the box, you need to break outside the next box, don't stop. This piece of advice has stuck with me in every project I involve myself, It is a reminder that as an artist, never stop being hungry, never stop exploring.
What about transformative professional experiences?
Actually, my audition for ECT was very transformative. I walked in expecting the run of the mill, monologue and a song type of audition, and instead I was welcomed into an exploration. It was an awakening experience, and luckily has led to an exciting journey with the company!
Why I do what I do...
I do what I do because I don't know what else to do! Being an artist is the one thing that always feels right to me. There is nothing that compares to the pleasure of truly connecting with people and art is the universal language.
What about ECT inspires you?
The constant and bottomless hunger that drives every artist involved. It creates a safe place that allows all of us to push our boundaries, individually and together, and that is truly something special.
Where have you traveled? Where would you like to visit?
I was fortunate enough to study abroad in London during my time at university. During that time I also got to travel across Italy and walk the coast of Northern Ireland. On that note, I crave to travel more and would love to visit Edinburgh, Athens, and the Nordic Countries.
My favorite "day-off" event would be...
Getting the chance to spend time with a good group of friends. Nothing is better than stimulating and easy conversation.
If I had one million dollars I would...
I would pay off all the debt I have, as well as my parents. Then I would take some time to travel and then try and settle down with blackbox theatre space.
Did you know...
I really enjoy writing poetry and playing live music, mostly drums.
